Religious Rituals

In my photographs I focus on the rituals of six of the main religions – Buddhism, Christianity, Sikhism, Judaism, Hinduism and Islam. I invited one representative from each faith to come along and be photographed whilst performing the chosen ritual of which I shot continuously throughout. Each ritual was performed in the same white open space, as my intention is to draw attention to the religious practitioners, and the nature of each ritual.
So much violence, death, and territorial conflict has come about in the name of religion. Religion promotes separatism, however when you look closely they are really not that different. In this project I intend to show the similarities between religions. Through the application of my practice and research I have found that the religious rituals of ablutions, purification, offerings, blessings, and recitations (amongst others) came up frequently, and there was much overlapping between the religious rituals.
In the earliest days of human existence burial rites were one of the first rituals to be born, and served our ancestors needs to connect to the land. By teaming the rituals photographs with atmospheric images of nature I hope to establish this connection, and endorse the beauty and spirit in all that is around us.
